move n'meet
ORTICOLARIO 4. 5. 6. October 2019
Villa Erba, Cernobbio, Como - Italy

about the garden
Il viaggio (‘The journey’) is intended as a meeting and discovery of the new, the ancient and the different; but is also intended as a tool to reduce the distance between places and human beings, cultures and traditions, and as a bridge to open the mind and foster a sense of unity.
In the "move n' meet" space, the theme can be interpreted both implicitly and explicitly. The plant choices mainly include plants that thrive in this particular area of the world. While some of the plants give you the impression that you’re in an exotic place.
Some species of plants from other eras have been used in a fresh and modern context. For example, the mythological Acanthus, that were once engraved on Corinthian capitals, dating back to 500 BC, have been repurposed for their majestic vegetation, beauty and resilience. This is an example of bridging the gap between "old" and "new".
To further illustrate the theme you will find the work of Attilio Tono, who created a sculpture characterized by it’s ascents and descents, which symbolise the difficulties and discoveries that every journey always entails. It’s strength lies in the combination of materials from different worlds: vegetation and minerals. Wood from non-native plants, such as the Atlantic Cedrus that originally came from North Africa and was able to establish itself as a prince lychee plant in many historic Italian gardens, meets the chalk/concrete, in turn permeated by colors that change it’s appearance. Here's the bridge that cancels out diversity.
Finally, water with it’s incessant movement has always been an indispensable vector for environments to be colonised by new plants.
A profound sensory journey, capable of transporting the mind, through nature and it’s infinite interpretations, to distant worlds and different eras, then bringing it back to rediscover with amazement the "here and now".
